Rachael Ray v. Mom

The other day I was watching Rachael Ray and she made this Tex-Mex BBQ Turkey Tamale Pie which I thought looked SO good. I spent the rest of the day wishing I had polenta on hand so that I could try this new recipe out. Well, somewhere during that day, I realized that I grew up eating a recipe that is almost identical. Ok, identical might be pushing it. But similar? Yes Very very similar. They are in the 'family.' So, here is the Mom version (aka easier, cheaper, and more likely that you have the ingredients on hand version) of Rachael's fancy skillet dinner.

Cornmeal Topped Sausage Pie

1 lb sausage
1 1/2 c green pepper, chopped
1 chopped onion
1 can navy beans (I used pinto!)
1 can stewed tomatoes
1 can tomato paste (I was out of this as well, so I substituted tomato sauce and cut back on the water)
1/2 c water
1 t sugar

Brown sausage in a oven-safe skillet. Add pepper and onion while browning sausage to begin softening. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and keep warm.

1/3 c flour
1/3 c cornmeal
1/3 c Parmesan cheese
1/4 t baking powder
1/4 c milk
1 beaten egg
1 T oil
Mix flour, cornmeal, cheese and baking powder. Add wet ingredients, only mixing until just combined.

Top sausage mixture with cornmeal mixture. Bake in a 400 degree oven, uncovered, for 12-15 minutes.

(I think Mom wins!)

*The husband said this recipe could stay in the recipe box :)

  1. Mmm... this looks yummy. Also, I LOVE your checker board table. Oh my goodness it is so cute. The red chairs add SO much and it makes me a little jealous inside. Thanks for your sweet comment on my blog. I would love to see more about your wedding. (This is me trying to encourage you to do a wedding series so I can hear more about Flint and I can see your beautiful wedding dress again.) Oh, and thanks for visiting my little food blog. I haven't really told anyone about it, because it is mostly just for David and I (even though I write it like I am talking to a group of people.) I'm glad you liked it. Hope you are doing well!
